Male die or model for a medal celebrating the wedding of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette

LS 2607

Date : 1779

The medalist Pierre-Joseph Lorthior (Lille, 1733-Paris, 1813), who became ‘the King’s engraver’ in 1776, was the author of the Great Seal of Marie Antoinette. Here he shows Marie-Antoinette on the throne, following the birth of Madame Royale on 19 December, 1778. A draped figure and a putto are presenting her with an oval shield, to which are attached two smaller shields bearing the arms of France and Austria-Lorraine, surmounted by the Royal Crown of France.
