Lion and salamander door knocker

LS 1431

Date : XVIth century | Medium : Wrought iron, chisel-finished.

France

This superbly wrought and chisel-finished piece with its rare iconography was designed to symbolise the struggles of Francis I (represented by the dragon-salamander) and Charles V (represented by the imperial lion).

It is thought to come from Pau Castle or Foix Castle. The town of Cognac, home of Francis I, still has a door knocker decorated with a salamander.
