Four-poster bed topped with plumes

LS 2462

Date : XVIth century | Medium : wrought iron, cut, embossed, originally painted and gilded

Southern Italy

This large bed could accommodate four people. The bedhead is decorated with a clematis bush in wrought iron. A central medallion of wrought iron or ceramic bore the initials or emblem of the master or couple who owned the bed. The finely wrought posts with their balusters and diamonds suggest the work of southern Italian craftsmen, with a certain Spanish influence. It could be fully dismantled and was easily transportable, and this type of bed can be found in Venice and northern Italy.
