Sign of a public writer

LS 4209

Date : XVIIIe | Medium : embossed iron

France

This panel with its depiction of a man standing and writing on a desk, topped with a rooster, is a sign designating a public scribe or perhaps a notary. The rooster, emblem of the French ancien régime, serves to herald the day that follows night: a fine symbol which also connotes the clarification of confused situations or thoughts.
