Door knocker with putti bearing a coat-of-arms

LS 3261

Date : Early XVIth century | Medium : chisel-finished cast iron and openwork iron

France

This door knocker follows a style developed by Réaumur, who had worked out how to pour the iron so that it could still be worked (unlike cast iron). The two putti and coat-of-arms are thus carefully polished. However the crown that tops the coat-of-arms section is rather coarsely fashioned.
