Corkscrew-cum-lighter

LS 1995.0.352

Date : XVIIIth century

France

This corkscrew with a hollow helix is equipped with a duck’s head set of ember tongs, culminating at the opposite end in a dog's head. The back of the plate was hardened in such a way that a flint stone could produce a spark whose fire would be transmitted to a piece of tinder which in turn would light a candle or a pipe. The plate bears the hallmark SEIGNOT.
